Cocomech by Higashio Mech Co. Ltd
If you are renovating your home or simply thinking of replacing those old water pipes, you may want to consider the Cocomech piping system from Japan. Most if not all of the water pipes at home are usually made of copper, stainless steel, Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC) or Polypropylene Random Copolymer (PPR). These piping materials have been used for the longest time. They are tried and tested and there seem to be no reason to change to a different material. For now, let's not get into the technicalities of these pipes as it will probably bore you.
Change. Why change to a different pipe material you ask? Well, if you are at a point where you need to replace those old pipes, ask again. How long has it been and why the need for replacement? If the existing pipes are copper or PPR and its been only 10 years, then what?
If you are renovating or rebuilding then it is a good opportunity to replace the old water pipes with material that has an expected lifetime that reaches 50 years.
Today, I will be introducing something different, the Cocomech PEX-AL-PEX pipes and MECHFit connector fittings. Yeah, I am sure you are like, 'Huh?!'. PEX is the abbreviation of Crossed-linked Polyethylene and AL, well, some of you may have guessed, Aluminum. PEX is a wear resistant material, so you know it will last. Thus, PEX-AL-PEX pipes; a three layered pipe, will last longer than the COE. ( COE is short for Certificate of Entitlement. In Singapore, you have to bid for a COE if you wish to own a car. The COE is valid for 10 years) PEX is also used in dental applications, watercraft and electrical cable insulation. For ease of writing, I will just refer the Cocomech PEX-AL-PEX pipes as Cocomec pipes.
These Cocomech pipes are flexible and comes in coiled rolls, but make no mistake, they are tough and rigid! These pipes can bend into a wide-radius turn without elbow joints. It can also handle short radius turns with supporting brackets. With lesser joints, you reduce the friction loss thus maximizing the water pressure at the outlet. They may be heavier than the regular PVC or PPR pipes of equivalent size but lighter than copper or stainless steel pipes. Being lightweight, it is easy for an inexperienced plumber to install, compared to the labour intensive copper pipes. If you are serious about employing an inexperienced plumber, be sure to ask for a huge discount off his labour charges! The Cocomech pipes can be used for both hot and cold water applications and they do not corrode.
